About

I’m a writer living in Austin, Texas. My new book The Swans of Harlem: Five Black Ballerinas, Fifty Years of Sisterhood, and their Reclamation of a Groundbreaking History is a love letter to my daughters. I’m also the author of Welcome to Utopia, which the Dallas Morning News said sits comfortably on the bookshelf next to other classic works about the culture of small-town America, including Sherwood Anderson's Winesburg, Ohio and Larry McMurtry's The Last Picture Show.

I’m a frequent contributor to Vanity Fair, and my writing has appeared in, among other places, The New York Times, Fast Company, Time, Glamour, and Entertainment Weekly, where I spent fifteen years writing about pop culture. Augusten Burroughs once generously wrote that I bring to the page “a documentarian’s eye and a poet’s soul,” which remains a great North Star. Currently I’m supposed to be revising my novel but am likely out walking the dogs.
